What do we mean when we say there are 'Warm Reds' and 'Cool Reds'?
PART TWO OF TWO
Red pigment is probably one of the oldest pigments the modern world uses, but it dates back to the Ancient World. Red Ochre dates back to the prehistoric cave paintings in Altamira, Spain, which date between 15000 and 16500 BC.
In Ancient Egypt during celebrations they would paint their bodies with red ochre, to them it was the colour of life, health and victory.
The Ancient Greeks would associate Red with the Greek gods of war, Phoebus and Ares. Throughout history and today the colour red has held and still holds special significance for cultures around the world.
There are many variations of Red pigment, which you can buy in all of the painting mediums; Oils, Acrylic, Gouache and Watercolour. They can be used straight from the tube or mixed with other pigments to create tints and tones, but which Reds are classed as ‘Warm’ reds and which are classed as ‘Cool’ reds?
By definition Red is a warmer colour on the colour wheel, but we can clearly see how Reds become warmer as they move towards Orange and Yellow, and cooler as they move towards Blue and Purple.
As Artists we all know how important planning is and how useful it is to create a preliminary colour palette before embarking on a painting. Testing out colours, making them darker or lighter or more vibrant, creating colour charts and mixing warmer or cooler colours.
Our preliminary investigations would also include; transparency of colour, opacity and mixing strengths. Embarking on these investigations will save us time in the long run and help us to understand how we can create a warm and cool balanced colour palette within our compositions. However, similarly buying a combination of warm and cool Red colours and understanding how they perform when mixed will save you time in the long run also.
Below we have compiled a list of familiar Red paint names which you may already own in your tool box, this list is not exhaustive. Then we have put them in two categories, Warm and Cool to make it easy to identify when purchasing.
Why is it important to choose the correct temperature? Warm Red or a Cool Red?
Using the correct warm or cool red paint, will inevitably save you time and money, and provide you with exactly the right type of colour clarity, appropriate for your painting.
If you want to mix a vibrant violet/ purple colour you could use a cool red pigment such as Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone Magenta that have a blue bias and a warm blue such as Prussian Blue, or Ultramarine Blue, which have a red bias. Mixing these two colours will provide you with a bright Violet/Purple colour. (look out for our next article on how to mix Violet/Purple).
Adding white to your mix will provide you with a higher value and a lighter Purple/Violet tint usually called Lilac.
Using a warm red such as Cadmium Red and a warm blue such as Phthalo Blue will result in more of a muted looking Purple/Violet. But do test out these theories and monitor your progress, so you can dip into your notes and investigations for future reference, keeping notes is an invaluable tool for aspiring artists.
If you wish to create a warm, rich, bright Orange colour you would need to use a warm red such as Cadmium Red and a warm yellow such as Cadmium Yellow. Applying varying amounts of red pigment to yellow pigment will provide you with a range of red-oranges or yellow-orange hues.
To darken you only need to add its complimentary colour blue, try a warm blue then try a cool blue, both will give you different results.
You can mix warm colours with cool colours, but your secondary colour may not be as vibrant as you wish, however if you need to mute colours this mixing technique is useful to know. Ultimately understanding colour temperatures will greatly assist in developing your colour mixing skills.
Most common names for RED paint colours, it should be noted that there can be many variations of the same ‘named’ colour by different manufacturers, for example a Liquitex Crimson may not be exactly identical in value as a Winsor & Newton Crimson even if the ingredients look the same!
Warm Reds have an Orange/Yellow Bias
Cool Reds have a Bluish Bias

All colours are ground in a grade of refined cold pressed linseed oil chosen for its neutral acidity. There is one exception to this Titanium White No.1. This is ground in refined safflower oil. As well as using traditional pigments this range also makes use of more recent technological breakthroughs in the production of pigments to produce paints of quality that previous generations did not have.
