Why artists need good lighting?
If you are a painter who mixes paint and works long hours in your studio, in an ideal world you will need a very large north facing window and the best quality artificial light, especially when working into the wee hours! ‘North Light’ is known as either reflected light or indirect light and produces a soft constant light.
If you don’t have either of these, we can suggest :
- covering up your window to diffuse the direct light coming in with tracing paper, this will change the direct light into a soft constant light and,
- if you are painting into the evening, consider quality daylight lamps and bulbs. This will ensure you colour match your palette at all times of the day and night.
Helpful information on Daylight bulbs and associated terminology
When you are buying daylight bulbs it is useful to understand the specific terminology used to describe the products and what they mean. Hopefully the descriptions below will make things a little easier to understand before you purchase.
What does a Kelvin Scale mean?
The colour temperature can vary in many light bulbs, Warm White, Cool White, Natural White and Daylight, the temperature is a way to describe how the light will look provided by the light source. It is measured in degrees of Kelvin(K) on a scale from 1,000 to 10,000. Domestic light will fall between 2000k to 4500k, whilst anything above 4500k will provide a colour temperature of blue-white light that mimics daylight. The higher up the Kelvin scale, the cooler and more blue the light. So a lamp with a Kelvin of 6500K would be called a cool light. Artists should buy a lamp or bulb on or above 6500k. Good to know when buying daylight bulbs and lamps for your studio.
What is a Lumen?
Lumens measure how much light you are getting from a bulb. More lumens means it's a brighter light; fewer lumens means it's a dimmer, more subdued light. Generally to light your home you will need different lighting solutions for each room. Soft and ambient lighting in the sitting room and bedroom which would also be a warmer light, so you would look for a lower unit number on the Kelvin scale and lower unit number on the lumen scale. You will need stronger and often more directional task lighting in bathrooms and kitchens, so look for LED bulbs that are on or over 800 lumens and 3500k to 4000k, which will give you a brighter natural white light. In your studio you will need the strongest of daylight bulbs or lamps when you lose the natural daylight, this will ensure colour matching and help prevent eye strain, so look for the highest number of lumens and highest unit number on the Kelvin scale for a clean blue-white light anything over 6500K.
Wattage
Wattage is the measure of how much electrical power a light source uses, not how bright the bulb is. Wattage refers to the bulb's energy consumption. Ideally to keep the cost down, changing incandescent lighting to LED energy-efficient lighting would be wise, LED bulbs use a lot less energy.Watts measure the amount of energy required to light products, whereas lumens measure the amount of light produced. For example if you wanted to replace a 40-Watt incandescent bulb which provides 450 lumens look for a 4-5 watt LED bulb which will provide 450 lumens, or a 100-watt incandescent bulb provides 1600 to 1800 lumens and can be replaced with 16-20watt LED which provides 1600 to 1800 lumens of light.. A huge difference in energy consumption but with the same brightness as the incandescent bulb.
What is the Colour Rendering Index (CRI)?
In simple terms the Colour Rendering Index (CRI) measures the ability of a light source to accurately reproduce the colours of the object it illuminates. Natural daylight has a CRI rating of 100, this is what ideally we’re aiming to mimic in finding a daylight lamp. CRI values that are 90 and anything above are considered excellent to provide true colour matching and better contrast.
What does Lux mean?
Lux is defined as the level of brightness at a particular distance from the light source. So the further from the light source the less the Lux level.
Lux = the light emitted by one lumen over one square metre.
What does LED stand for?
LED stands for light emitting diode. LED lighting products produce light up to 90% more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs. How do they work? An electrical current passes through a microchip, which illuminates the tiny light sources we call LEDs and the result is visible light. To prevent performance issues, the heat LEDs produce is absorbed into a heat sink. LED lights will save you money by using up 90% less energy and they last much longer than incandescent bulbs!
