For many years, Hahnemühle has been consistently working towards finding more environmentally friendly and sustainable ways to produce paper.

Hahnemühle started to use bamboo fibres, a fast-growing and sustainable raw material, in 2008 and launched the mixed media paper Bamboo, made from 90% bamboo fibres and 10% cotton rag. Hahnemühle extended the range with bamboo papers and books suitable for different painting techniques throughout the years.

With the new Agave, Hemp and Sugar Cane papers, Hahnemühle is consistently focussing on further resource-saving papers in the spirit of environmental protection. Hahnemühle's "Natural Line" includes the artist papers SugarCane Watercolour, Agave Watercolour, Hemp Sketch, Bamboo Mixed Media and Bamboo Sketch.

Hahnemühle supports environmental and social projects at regional, national and international level with part of the proceeds from the Natural Line within its Green Rooster Initiative.

All Natural Line papers are:

  • Vegan
  • resistant to ageing
  • acid-free

Exploring the benefits of Hahnemuhle Sugar Cane Watercolour Paper 290gsm

In the world of watercolour painting, selecting the right paper is crucial for achieving desired results. Hahnemuhle Sugar Cane watercolour paper offers a unique blend of quality, sustainability, and performance. In this article, we delve into the key features and advantages of this environmentally friendly paper. The Hahnemühle Sugar Cane watercolour paper is the latest addition to the Hahnemühle Natural Line. The 290 gsm paper is made from 70% fast-growing sugar cane fibres, so-called bagasse, a by-product of sugar extraction. With 70% sugar cane and 30% cotton, the natural white, warm-toned watercolour paper combines the strength of sugarcane fibres and the softness of cotton. These fibres are also plant based residues from the textile industry.

Key Features:

Eco-Friendly Composition:

Hahnemuhle Sugar Cane watercolour paper is crafted from sustainable raw materials, predominantly using fibres from sugar cane residue. This eco-friendly approach reduces environmental impact without compromising on quality.

Exceptional Texture:

The paper's surface boasts a fine texture that enhances the painting experience. It provides optimal tooth for holding pigment, allowing artists to achieve remarkable depth and detail in their watercolour artworks. The paper with its cold pressed surface structure has a wonderful velvety feel. It can be excellently worked with watercolour, gouache and all wet-on-wet techniques. Colours shine brilliantly and velvety.

Durability and Archivability:

Despite its environmentally conscious composition, Hahnemuhle Sugar Cane watercolour paper maintains excellent durability and longevity. Artists can trust that their creations will stand the test of time, thanks to the paper's acid-free and archival qualities.

Versatility:

Whether used for wet-on-wet techniques, dry brushing, or intricate details, this paper offers versatility to accommodate various watercolour painting styles. Its ability to withstand multiple layers of paint ensures artists can experiment freely without fear of paper deterioration. The natural fibres of the sugar cane give the paper a high stability and tear resistance, so that the paper can absorb large amounts of water and colours without the fibres standing up or the paper curling badly. Colours can be easily dissolved on the surface and glazed again. The paper masters colour gradients and effects, such as salt or water drops, but also thin lines and accents with fineliners.

Performance and User Experience:

Artists who have used Hahnemuhle Sugar Cane watercolour paper commend its exceptional performance. The paper's ability to handle watercolour washes with ease, along with its reliable colour retention, contributes to a seamless painting process. Additionally, its eco-friendly credentials resonate positively with environmentally conscious creators.

We used the Mixed Media Bamboo paper with Derwent Inktense pencils and Derwents latest range in Watercolour Paint. Derwent Watercolour Paint Pan Set of 24.

We found the Mixed Media Paper to be an excellent substrate for these two mediums. The colours stayed vibrant and luminous on the paper. Great absorption and easy to mix the layered Inktense pencil colours actually on the paper together. Glazing the inktense over the new Derwent watercolour paint was really successful, when the watercolour paint had dried, we pencilled a harmonious darker colour over the top and used a brush pen to dilute the pencil pigment creating a darker tone.
