About

In March 2009 I suffered a severe stroke. This left me unable to use my right hand, which was my dominant hand. I was in a wheelchair for 12 months until I learnt to walk again.

In Dec 2012 my wife and I went on a cruise, which as part of the on-board entertainment offered a 10 day water colour painting course. I decided to take part by attempting to use my left hand. On returning home I continued to paint, changing from Water colour to Acrylics and then finally to Oils.

Over the next few years, with the help of You Tube and Sky Arts, I have continued to learn and improve my new found skill. Having had no previous experience in painting, it has been quite a steep learning curve but one which I enjoy immensely and has also helped in my rehabilitation..

Hello Ian, you are an amazing testimony to the therapeutic beauty of art. I am well impressed by the subjects you have demonstrated here at Granthams Artlypool online. I particularly love the work you have done in capturing the essence and likeness of Sir Billy Conolly. Clearly you have developed a real love for art and it shows in your many achievements to date. Thank you for sharing.

Wow! Had to leave a comment here – what an inspiring story. And your artwork is great. I can’t believe that you’ve learned to do this with your non-dominant hand – it’s absolutely stunning work.
