Unleash Your Creativity with Liquitex Inks: Versatility, Vibrancy & Mixed Media Magic

At ARTdiscount, we know that artists thrive when their tools unlock fresh creative possibilities — and Liquitex Inks do exactly that. These professional, water-based acrylic inks are packed with artist-quality pigments, giving you a vibrant, fluid medium that is as versatile as it is easy to use.

A Spectrum of Colour — Including Iridescent

Liquitex Inks come in an extensive range of bold, brilliant colours — from vivid primaries and deep earth tones to shimmering iridescent hues that add an extra dimension to your work. Their metallic shades like Iridescent Rich Bronze, Silver, and Gold are perfect for highlights, accents, or full-on statements that catch the light and draw the eye.

Easy to Use, Endless Applications

One of the biggest advantages of Liquitex Inks is how effortlessly they integrate into your workflow. They come ready to use straight from the bottle — no dilution or preparation required — and their ultra-fluid consistency means they flow smoothly with brushes, dip pens, airbrushes, or even calligraphy nibs.

You can build up transparent washes, layer colours for luminous glazes, or create bold graphic marks with ease. The acrylic base dries waterproof, making it ideal for layering without lifting or muddying previous layers.

Perfect for Mixed Media Artists

Liquitex Inks are a dream for artists who love to mix things up. Combine them with acrylic paints, markers, mediums, gels, or texture pastes — they blend seamlessly with other Liquitex products and other water-based media. Add vibrant ink washes over textured acrylic backgrounds, detail your watercolours with iridescent accents, or use them with stencils for crisp, striking patterns.

They also work brilliantly on a wide variety of surfaces — paper, canvas, wood, or even fabric — opening up endless avenues for experimentation.

Your Next Creative Adventure

Whether you’re an illustrator, calligrapher, mixed media artist, or just dipping your brush into new techniques, Liquitex Inks are an inspiring, accessible way to add vivid colour, metallic shine, and layered depth to your work.

 Getting Started:

Liquitex Acrylic Inks come ready to use straight from the bottle — no dilution needed — but you can thin them with water or acrylic mediums to create washes or subtle glazes. Shake the bottle gently before use to ensure pigments are evenly dispersed. Use a pipette, dropper, or pour directly to control how much ink you need.

Versatility in Colour and Mediums

One of the most remarkable features of acrylic inks, particularly those within the Liquitex range, is their exceptional intermixability. Artists can effortlessly blend different hues to unlock an infinite spectrum of custom colours, allowing for unparalleled creative freedom and precision in colour matching. This seamless blending capability ensures that the artist is never limited by a predefined palette but can instead craft the exact shade required for their artistic vision.

Beyond their inherent colour versatility, these acrylic inks are also engineered for complete compatibility with the entire family of Liquitex mediums and acrylic paints. This expansive compatibility opens up a world of possibilities for artists looking to explore diverse textures, finishes, and applications. Whether an artist wishes to increase transparency, add gloss or matte finishes, create impasto effects, or achieve glazing techniques, the inks integrate flawlessly with various Liquitex mediums.

This synergistic relationship means that artists can confidently experiment with different combinations, knowing that the structural integrity and archival qualities of their artwork will remain uncompromised. The ability to mix inks with acrylic paints further enhances their utility, allowing for dynamic shifts in opacity, flow, and layering techniques, ultimately empowering artists to push the boundaries of their creative expression.

Surfaces You Can Use Them On:
One of the best things about Liquitex Acrylic Inks is their versatility.

 They adhere beautifully to:

  • Watercolour paper, mixed media paper, and illustration boards

  • Canvas (stretched or canvas pads)

  • Wood panels

  • Fabric (for non-washable art pieces)

  • Primed metal or plastic

  • Clay board and ceramics

  • Even unconventional surfaces like stones or plaster

Always make sure the surface is clean and, if needed, primed for best adhesion.

Techniques to Explore:

  • Layering & Glazing: Their transparent nature is perfect for layering. Build up depth and luminosity by adding thin layers, letting each dry in between.

  • Dropping & Splattering: Use pipettes or brushes to drop or flick ink for expressive splatters and abstract effects.

  • Brush Painting & Calligraphy: Apply with brushes, dip pens, or calligraphy nibs for fine line work, lettering, or illustrative detail.

  • Airbrushing: These inks are thin enough to use in airbrushes, giving you smooth gradients and soft blends.

  • Stencilling & Masking: Combine with stencils or masking fluid to create sharp edges and repeating patterns.

  • Watercolour Techniques: While they’re permanent when dry, you can treat them like watercolours when wet — blend and bleed colours into each other for ethereal washes.

  • Mixed Media: Combine them with acrylic paints, markers, gel pens, pastels, or collage work for dynamic layers.

Combine with Other Liquitex Products:
Liquitex Acrylic Inks play well with the whole Liquitex range. Mix them with:

  • Liquitex Pouring Medium to create fluid pouring art with intense, vibrant cells.

  • Liquitex Gloss or Matte Mediums for custom finishes and thicker applications.

  • Liquitex Gesso to prep unusual surfaces for best results.

  • Liquitex Acrylic Paints for added texture and opacity. Layer ink washes over dry acrylic paint or add detail over an ink background.

Pro Tip: Because these inks dry fast and are water-resistant when dry, clean your tools immediately after use to prevent clogging or staining. Use soap and warm water for brushes, nibs, and airbrush parts.

Kimono inspiration

Inspired by this exquisitely embroidered kimono sleeve we created an artwork using the Liquitex Acrylic Inks. After drawing out the design, we employed the Acrylic Iridescent ink set of 6 inks, Naphthol Crimson, and Phthalocyanine Blue Green Shade on Bockingford Watercolour Paper - Approx. 15" x 11" - 20 Sheets per Pack - 140lb / 300gsm

These vibrant inks deeply penetrated the paper, yielding an amazing velvet effect. The iridescent inks were perfect in creating areas of semi reflective surfaces.

The artistic process for this piece drew heavily on established watercolour techniques, particularly in the application of glazing. This method involved applying successive, translucent layers of colour to build depth and intensity, especially evident in the gradual darkening of the leaf areas. A crucial aspect of this technique was the meticulous timing of each layer; it is strongly recommended to allow each initial layer to fully dry before proceeding with subsequent applications.

This patience is paramount because, unlike traditional watercolours, once dry, these layers become entirely waterproof. Consequently, they cannot be reactivated or "lifted" to expose the pristine white of the paper beneath, a common technique in watercolour for creating highlights or correcting mistakes. The final touch involved the precise addition of silver iridescent ink, used sparingly to introduce subtle, glimmering details that catch the light, enhancing the overall visual impact of the artwork.
