It's been a busy weekend in Blackpool; the weather has been very up and down but it didn't stop people attending the beloved football or for our colleague, attending the Tina Dempsey exhibition at the Grundy Art Gallery.
Having seen the pictures of this exhibition, I'm eager to attend as well. Tina Dempsey's topic of choice is Joy 'a feeling of great pleasure and happiness.' The Grundy Art Gallery is a grand building, set in the centre of our town. The artwork is all presented perfectly, showing off the old features of the many rooms.
In Tina's artist statement she explains how her practice examines joy, exploring what joy is, how it makes us feel and what triggers it within us; capturing the sensation and pausing it, allowing it to be examined closer. With the white painted walls and vibrant works, you'll be sure to be dragged into a world of your own. As you can see above, it's captivating for children too.
Tina uses several mediums to create her pieces, pencil, paint and ink when print making. She also produces collages which 'generates an abstract visual representation of joy.'
The displaying of the work aims to invigorate the immediate space, I mentioned this earlier briefly. The placing of the pieces is meant to trigger a positive feeling for the viewer, both physically and visually through the playful use of colour, shape, pattern, form, and texture.
What does joy feel like to you? Let Tina help you question that! This exhibition is being held until April 27th 2019, if you're in the Lancashire area please head down. Tina Dempsey's exhibition continues Grundy Art Gallery's programme of solo exhibitions by artists living and working across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast.
