Royal Academy: Summer Exhibition 2020

The Summer Exhibition has run without interruption since 1769 and the academy don't intend to break that streak in 2020. If you haven't visited the Summer Exhibition before, add it to your bucket list for this year. Anyone can apply to enter the art show, which I believe makes it that bit more special. Plus, expect to see artwork using a range of different mediums. You will certainly leave with a mind full of fresh ideas and inspirations. At the Summer Exhibition you will see prints and paintings, film and photography, sculpture, architectural works and more.

So, do you have the confidence to submit your work into this years exhibition? The call for entries is open until 23:59 February 17th 2020.

The exhibition allows you to "Explore art you love, art you hate, and art that simply puts a smile on your face." - Royal Academy of Arts

Call for entries

Many of the artworks are for sale but proceeds go to help fund the non-profit-making activities, including training the next generation of artists in the Royal Academy Schools.

The first round of selection is made from digital images of artworks, from which the judges will shortlist up to 4,000 entries to be delivered to the Academy for the final round. If you are successful in the first, digital round, Royal Academy will notify you by email and ask you to deliver your artwork to the Royal Academy for the next round of selection. You can also check the progress of your submission using your Summer Exhibition account whenever you like.

An Artists' Guide to Charcoal

Compressed charcoal was developed in the 20th century to strengthen the natural structural weakness of Willow and Vine charcoal. To create compressed charcoal or charcoal pencils natural gum or wax binder is added to powdered charcoal. This makes the charcoal stronger to draw with and produce less dust. Many grades of this compressed charcoal can be found in stick forms or in the form of charcoal pencils.
